A shock for the Bible Belt and many might bristle at the thought of the man who could sing "How Great Thou Art" with such conviction and passion, and also "be into" numerology (Cheiro's Book of Numbers). That had to frustrating to say the least just when Elvis was getting back on track wanting something better for himself they do that and you are back to square one.

The book is an easy read with lots of interesting dates times and events that Jerry had with Elvis Presley.

We also learn a bit about Elvis's attitude towards his movie career (Elvis knew his movies were crap, but seems stars didnt have the pull they do today).

I haven’t read any other biographies or memoirs about Elvis, but I’ve seen a bunch of documentaries and this book aligns well with what I know based on other sources which makes me trust in its content more. By the time I read the epilogue, detailing Jerry's undying devotion for the King's legacy, I got teary-eyed. I am just an average teacher in a modest suburb in Virginia, but somehow I managed to find this gem of a guy and try to appreciate him each and every day.Their entire world, upbringing almost - because they were all kids when they started hanging out - was about protecting Elvis. Frankly, you don't need me to tell you that Elvis was a great performer, that Heartbreak Hotel can still give you chills, or that If I Can Dream can still make you cry.

Over the next thirteen years Jerry would work for Elvis in various capacities — from bodyguard to photo double to co-executive producer on a karate film. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11. There's a lot of humanity in the stories of Elvis, including his personal thoughts, his sheer generosity, his remarkable insecurity and his relationships with those closest to him. It is a captivating, well-written, and un-crucifying account of many historic moments that shows the real birth and evolution of Rock and Roll and how it bridged the racial divide.EDIT: Since Tom Hanks is playing him in the movie, Jerry also talks about The Colonel and I had never heard of the Colonel outside of this book. For all the kids who first got excited about the sound of rock and roll, there were twice as many who thought it sounded just horrible. Me and a Guy Named Elvis looks at Presley from a friend’s perspective, offering readers the man rather than the icon—including insights into the creative frustrations that lead to Elvis’s abuse of prescription medicine and his tragic death.
