David McKee (1935 – 2022) was the creator of well-known characters including King Rollo, Mr Benn and Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, which is now published in more than 60 languages and has its own successful global merchandise programme. Brilliant story as ever but Disappointingly the title and front cover of the book are only printed on the outer removable sleeve. A wonderfully upbeat and powerful tale that celebrates the uniqueness of the individual - and provides one of literature's best-loved characters too. For his contribution as a children's illustrator he was UK nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2006. Me ha gustado que desde el principio si bien Elmer era diferente, todos lo querían tal como era y él mismo se aceptaba.

The illustrations, are basic but beautiful and Elma’s patchwork colours were the biggest selling point for my daughter when she was younger than one, but then gradually becoming more interested in the other elephants and animals as she grew up. David McKee has a keen insight into what will appeal to little children, a lovely way with words, producing bold and attractive illustrations, and a story with a strong heart at its core. Grandpa Eldo asks Elmer and Wilbur to help a young elephant find her way back to her herd - and they get a shock when they see she is pink! It would also be a useful resource to use with children in the reception and year 1 ages ranges as it offers a message of accepting others, understanding that everyone is different and being happy with who you are. For over 35 years and across 30 stories, Elmer has spread a message of confidence, friendship and compassion to children all around the world. So, sadly, he crept away, determined to somehow cover himself with grey, so that he would blend in with the others. Little readers love the fantastic book, which helps them learn that it’s ok to be different, just like Elmer.

Nevertheless, when the Andersen Press reprinted a shortened version of the original Elmer story in 1989, the gentle message of inclusion and acceptance was part of the book's immediate success, which spawned a series of subsequent books and wide range of popular merchandise about the patchwork Elephant. Sophie Aldred also read his first story which was also animated by Mike Hibbert in an episode of Words and Pictures from 1993, featuring the letter E. Little hands will love turning each sturdy page and meeting favourite friends from the world of Elmer the patchwork elephant. In fact, I was surprised at how much he felt for him, right at the first pages he identified that he was sad about being different, and he completely anticipated what his intentions were as he wandered away from the other elephants.
