A comedian writing about cake might sound twee, or evoke the sort of defiant hedonism that defines much of Jo Brand’s work. I don’t think it’s the same as saying, ‘they didn’t love me’”, she smiles, pushing her glasses up her nose. Many of these chapters are about her mother's final illness and surviving the grief when she died, such as "Chimney cake, or, The thoughts I have about cancer when I open my fridge door at night for a snack". A few days later, I recounted the whole thing to my therapist during our session and told her what my draft reply had said, waiting at home to be sent.

Wix was too shy to perform at school though in an early chapter, she describes an incident where, aged 13, she stole the punchline of a joke being told by a boorish man at a dinner party with her parents. As a teenager, Wix realised the power she had over men thanks to an encounter with a lecherous adult male who demeaned his wife in public and, after Wix ruined the punchline to his joke just because she could, used his physicality to threaten her.Elegant and eloquent, a beautifully written book on grief, and women, and humanity and how some people (I’m looking at you, English grandad) are just relentless tw*ts that you have to navigate your way around. Katy highlights how this drawn-out process can be extremely painful, knowing that grief is looming just around the corner. Oh wow - I saw the title and subtitle, but little had I realised what full on emotion I was going into with this. Her best friend and both her parents died within months of each other, the grief triggering a paralysing depression.

if we are to get anywhere in this world, we must, at some point, learn to sever the ties between applause and self-worth. She didn't name-drop to 'impress' us with who she has worked alongside, but she also didn't divulge all information, so for example, although she did discuss incidents which had happened to her within her acting life, she wasn't completely lifting the veil and bringing other people into the spotlight. I’m not usually one for writing in books, it feels forbidden, but I found myself underlining sentences that spoke to me.

After university, she went to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and while there she decided to compete in the Funny Women competition, despite never having done comedy before.
